Josh VanMeter Shops Trask and Paige Denim at Christopher James

Happy Fourth Of July From Christopher James!

On behalf of all of us at Christopher James we wish you and your family a happy and safe Fourth of July weekend. We are open today until 6 pm and will be closed Saturday as we will be celebrating with our families.

The 4th means summer fun and summer means baseball. With the season right around the corner we were pleasantly surprised to have Indiana native and Cincinnati Reds player Josh VanMeter in the store the other day. Josh picked up a few pair of Trask Italian sneakers and some great Paige jeans. Good luck this season, Josh and hoping you can hit a few more long ones like this…

Keep it or Lose it?

To Shave or Not to Shave and A Special Offer from Christopher James…

We trust that you and your families are staying healthy during these challenging times and we look forward to the time we are allowed to re-open and see your smiling faces.

Speaking of faces, because of my hair stylist also being deemed non-essential I am unable to get my bi-weekly (or fortnightly for my friends from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand) haircut. Thus, my hair is in a state of flux. Slowly growing and making me look like a baby bird. I have decided to also pass on shaving during this time. Well, we are in the second week of this science project and I need your input as to whether to let it keep growing or shave it at once. I know I’ll never be able to compete with Joel as he has “THE” beard which all others are judged against but I’m open to hearing what you have to say. In addition, the wittiest comment will receive $100.00 Gift Card just for participating.

Shop Big in a Small Way This Saturday at Christopher James

There are BIG savings to be had at local favorite Christopher James this Saturday, November 30, during Small Business Saturday. The after-Thanksgiving treats include $100 off any regular price sale of $500 or more. Stock up on your favorite brands like Robert Graham, Peter Millar, Canali, Hickey Freeman, Coppley and Emmanuel Berg  You can also score $40 off any regularly priced pair of shoes. When it comes to a special sale day like this, we go big at Christopher James

Speaking of shopping big, who wants to be in a crowded big-box store during the biggest sale weekend of the year, where you know you won’t receive any personal shopping attention, you’ll be cranky and warm from walking between your parked car in the crowded lot and on (finally!) to the floor that carries menswear. Even then, you won’t be guaranteed that your long wait in the checkout line will be worth your time in clothing you bought — clothing of questionable quality.

Or if you’re opting for doing all of your shopping online, who says you’ll like the way that new sweater feels around your neck? Or it’s not until you tear open the packaging that you realize the navy blue checked shirt you bought actually appears more green than blue. Buy slacks for the office online? We don’t recommend it.

Shopping local at Christopher James during Small Business Saturday is an experience unlike anything you’ll find in a big-box store or on a virtual cart while you’re binging on Netflix. You see smiling faces who are there to help. You get help finding your size in the half-zip sweater you’ve had your eye on. You are advised on the patterned shirt to wear under a new sport coat. You pick a more tailored suit, thanks to the courage you’ve mustered from the encouraging Christopher James staff.

See you at Christopher James this Saturday, November 30, and thank you for shopping small!

Some Rules Are Meant to Be Broken

Work place style has evolved, there’s no doubt about that. Whether you work at a law firm, in a doctor’s office, or are part of the financial or professional services industries or you’re a teacher, the guidelines for workplace dress are drastically different than they were 10 years ago. Business casual rules were shattered years ago and if you’re unsure what’s de rigeur at the moment, visit us at Christopher James Menswear in Fort Wayne and we’ll help you out.

What they wore then: A suit with shoulder pads big enough on which to land a plane, a solid-colored shirt and tie.

What you wear now: Comfortable, form-fitting sport coat from Coppley over a casual button-down patterned shirt by Emanuel Berg with a pair of neat jeans by 34 Heritage. No holes.

What they wore then: Short-sleeve shirts in the summer with a tie and dress slacks. Sorry to bring back terribly vivid memories.

What you wear now: An untucked long-sleeve shirt from Peter Millar, a half-zip coordinating pullover and chinos by Bill’s Khakis. Skip the pocket protector.

What they wore then: A too-big V-neck sweater, tie and solid-colored button down shirt. Pleated khakis down below.

What you wear now: Pants with pleats should find their way into your closet if you have larger legs or carry more weight around your midsection. Otherwise, pleats shouldn’t be having a moment in your wardrobe, gentlemen. Flat-front pants are flattering on slim men of all ages and are quite flattering. Paired with a cashmere sweater and vibrantly patterned shirt, you’ll be ready to take a seat at the conference room table in this getup.

What they wore then: Lace-up dress shoes or stodgy and stiff leather loafers.

What you wear now: Refined sneakers from Trask or leather tennis shoes from On that will make you feel like you’re walking around the office on air.

The staff at Christopher James believes the laidback look is here to stay, at least for a while. Stop in at our store and we’ll help you put some casual clothing options to work for you. See you soon!

Dress Up — and Comfortably — For Cocktails on the Deck

August is the epitome of summer. It’s the high point of the season and staring at the month on the calendar makes you stop and think about how fast the warm months are flying by. Wind down next weekend with friends and drinks on the deck. Celebrate a great summer by making it a proper cocktail party and dress up!

The full suit getup isn’t necessary, but do throw on a well-fitting Coppley, Hickey Freeman or Paul Betenly sport coat from Christopher James. The team at Christopher James will help you find the best sport coat for your frame in a flattering fit and style for a great price. Visit us to find a well-fitting blazer that can take you from a job interview, to the board room, to a cocktail party.

We know a thing or two about style, but we also know our cocktails and cocktail parties. The management team here at Christopher James is particular to a reliably good Rum and Coke cocktail. Invite a few friends, buy a wedge of cheese and water crackers from the grocery, add bunches of grapes and some mixed nuts and you can call it a party.

Cheers from Christopher James!
